About Halfatree

Made by one,
shaped by a
lifetime of games

Halfatree is the independent game company of Jack Halferty: solo by headcount, ambitious by intent, and rooted in the games that made play feel limitless.

Lifelong gamer

It started with a PS2.

I was born in 2001 and have been a lifelong gamer. My first game was MX Unleashed for the PlayStation 2, and I have been hooked ever since. I want to create games that can give someone the same feeling I had when I first discovered what games could be.

Gaming has grown enormously. That growth has produced incredible work, but some of the directness, affordability, and playful weirdness of its earlier years can get lost along the way.

Halfatree exists to make small games feel whole.

Breaking down modern development

Scale is a choice, not a requirement.

AAA teams can grow into the hundreds or thousands once outsourcing is included. At that size, communication becomes a project of its own. Games take more time and more money to produce, and those costs eventually reach the player.

Halfatree takes the opposite route: choose a manageable idea, protect its identity, and make the most complete version a tiny team can realistically deliver.

The Halfateam

Small enough to stay close.

The team is currently small enough - one person - to maintain a constant creative direction. Design, development, and iteration stay connected without middle management or a long chain of approvals.

That does not mean doing everything alone forever. It means collaboration should serve a clear game instead of turning the game into a reason for the organization to exist.

What shaped the studio
